W9 Details for 2008
Hi everyone,
I'd like to clarify some of the confusion about submitting W9s. First, here is a little background information on W9s from our FAQs:
All businesses are required by law to send a 1099 to any individual who is paid $600 or more (in cash or goods) during a calendar year. A 1099 is an IRS form that businesses (like Expo) send to individuals (like our members) to indicate how much they've been paid by Expo during a calendar year. Expo also has to file a copy of the 1099s with the IRS.
The main pieces of information included on the 1099 are the amount of money paid, and recipient's name, address, and Social Security number. To gather this information, Expo sends W-9 forms to any member who has received $600 or more in a calendar year. We will notify you if we need this information from you and do not yet have it. As always, we will never use your personal information for anything other than Expo business with you.
When your Expo earnings for a calendar year reach $500, you will see a message on the earnings page of your profile staying that you need to submit a W9. We ask for this because we anticipate that you may earn over $600 in that year. You will also receive an email from Expo asking you to submit your W9. Once we have flagged your account as needing a W9, we cannot pay you until you have submitted your form.
You only need to submit a W9 to Expo once. This means that if you submitted a W9 to Expo last year, you do not need to submit one again this year. Therefore you will not see a note on your profile asking you to send us your form.
For those of you who do need to submit a W9, here is how the process works:- You fax or email your signed W9 to Expo.
- We will process your W9 within two weeks of receiving it.
- Once your W9 is processed, we will send you any owed payments.
If you submit your W9 and do not receive payment within two weeks, you may contact us to ask about the status of your account.
I hope this helps. Thanks!
